Location: Barrow Island, WA
Services: Turnkey Concept, Engineering, Construction , FIFO ongoing support
Barrow Island sits approximately 50km North West off the coast of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. An A-Class Nature Reserve, it is one of the most important wildlife refuges in the world, with 95 percent of the island included in this reserve. Barrow Island is also home to Australia’s largest gas undertaking, the Gorgon Gas Project.
Precept Services was contracted by Holcim Australia to provide a new concrete plant to supply the ongoing concrete requirements of the Gorgon Foundation Project, as well as cater for possible future concrete requirements following the completion of the Gorgon Foundation Project. The project included supply, installation and commissioning of the concrete plant, as well as ongoing support provided through FIFO technicians on site continuously over the two years following completion of the plant.
Work had to be undertaken in line with extremely strict practices around the management of the environment, ensuring the ecology of the island remains intact. This included managing the logistics of a rigorous and time-consuming quarantine process involving inspection, wrapping and fumigating of all materials and equipment going onto the island; stringent rules regarding movement, behaviour and living on the island in relation to protection of the island’s plants and animals; and travel limitations imposed by quarantine processes and the remoteness of the location.
The project included, but was not limited to:
- Phased design, supply, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of a chassis-mounted concrete batching plant and associated infrastructure, with the capacity to service the remaining concrete requirements of the Gorgon Foundation Project, with an average expected concrete demand of 100m3 per week, and a maximum expected daily concrete demand of 30m3.
- A design life of twenty years was required in accordance with Australian Standards, and compliance with the Gorgon Project’s Environment, Cyclone and Regulatory requirements.
